Simplifying quadratic functions

Posted by maths083 on August 2, 2009

Examples

Simplify the following expressions.
a 3x + 2y + 5x − 5y
Solution:
3x + 2y + 5x − 5y = 8x -3y

b 2×2+ 5x − 5 + 3×2 + 2x − 6
Solution:
2×2 + 5x − 5 + 3×2 + 2x − 6 =
5×2 + 7x -11

c 5m + 5
7m + 7
Solution:
5m + 5 = 5( m+1) =    5
7m + 7    7 ( m+1)        7

d x2+ 5x + 6
x+2
Solution:
x2+ 5x + 6 = (x+2) (x+3) = x+3
x+2                   x+2

e x2 – 1 =
x2 +3x + 2

Solution:

x2 – 1 =          (x -1) (x+1) = (x -1)
x2 +3x + 2   (x+1) (x+2)   (x+2)

f 3x-6 × 4x +4
x+1      x2-4
Solution:
3x-6 × 4x +4 = 3 (x – 2) × 4 (x +1) = 12
x+1      x2-4      (x+1)(x-2) (x+2)     (x+2)

g x2+ 5x + 6 × x2- x – 12
x2 – 2x – 8        x2 – 2x -15
Solution:
x2+ 5x + 6 × x2- x – 12 =
x2 – 2x – 8     x2 – 2x -15
(x+2)(x+3) × (x-4)(x+3) = x+3
(x-4)(x+2) (x+3) (x- 5)       (x-5)
